Transylvania Defeats Women's Tennis

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 13, 2026) – Transylvania University posted a 6-1 victory over Emerson College in a non-conference women's tennis match at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus on Thursday.

Highlights

  • Senior Maria Hayes led Transylvania's three double winners in the match, providing the match clinching singles win along the way.
  • Senior Maddy Williams and sophomore Ellie Held were also double winners for the Pioneers, teaming up to clinch the doubles point with their 6-3 win at No. 2 before adding singles wins as well.
  • Juniors Lilly Hartman and Eva Clark also notched singles wins for Transylvania.
  • First year Teah Login earned Emerson's point with her win at No. 1 singles.
  • Junior Amaya Briones and sophomore Abigail Miner teamed up for a win at No. 3 doubles for the Lions.

How It Happened

  • Transylvania won two of the three doubles matches to clinch the first point of the match, with Williams and Held claiming the deciding win at No. 2 doubles.
  • Clark captured the first singles point for the Pioneers by recording a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles against Emerson senior Carlson Jones.
  • Login cut the Transylvania lead in half and captured a point for Emerson with her 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against sophomore Paulina Razo-Zapata.
  • Hartman drew the Pioneers within a point of the match win by defeating senior Jayden Beverly, 6-0, 6-2.
  • Hayes followed with the match clinching point at No. 2 singles, posting a 6-4, 6-2 decision against Briones.

Coach's Corner
"I thought we fought hard against a very talented and deep Transylvania team," said Emerson head coach Burke Paxton. "Doubles came down to closing better in the wind, and I thought we were in almost every game of singles, just could not quite get enough deuce points."

Emerson (4-4, 0-1 NEWMAC) returns to action on Friday, March 20, when it opens NEWMAC play at No. 8 nationally ranked MIT in Cambridge at noon. Transylvania (5-3, 0-0 HCAC) hosts Berea College on March 21 at 11 a.m.
