Women's Volleyball Opens ECAC Tournament With 3-0 Sweep Over Morrisville

BOSTON, Mass. - The Emerson women's volleyball team played host to three teams in the first round of the ECAC Division III Volleyball championships on Wednesday afternoon at Brown & Plofker Gym. The top ranked Lions faced visiting No. 4 Morrisville State Mustangs in the first match of the day and took a 3-0 sweep. The second match of the day consisted of No. 3 Anna Maria against No. 2 Manhattanville, where the Valiants defeated the Amcats in three straight sets. 

With the win, Emerson moves on to the quarterfinal round on Saturday afternoon against Manhattanville at 2:00 p.m. 

MATCH ONE: Emerson 3, Morrisville 0

Freshman Bella Edwards (Palisades, Calif.) powered out 15 kills and hit .652 to help lead the Emerson women's volleyball team to a first round 3-0 sweep over Morrisville State of the ECAC Division III Volleyball championship . After the Lions cruised to a 25-13 win in the opening frame, they powered out a 25-15 win the second frame and halted a comeback from the Mustangs in the third set to take the 25-18 win. 

Edwards paced the Lions with 15 kills, while sophomore Moira Brennan (Glenview, Ill.) registered 31 assists. Brennan and senior Amanda Linzmeyer (Huntington Beach, Calif.) each had three aces. Sophomore Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.) had a match-high 13 digs. Senior Jules Augustine (Skaneateles, N.Y.) led the defense with two blocks. 

Junior Lindsey Sunderlage (Kingston, Ill.) led Morrisville with seven kills and had one block. Senior Courtney LaVere (Oswego, N.Y.) had three aces, while freshman Samantha Wolf (Liverpool, N.Y.) registered 13 digs. 


MATCH TWO: Manhattanville 3, Anna Maria 0

Manhattanville cruised to a 25-9 victory in the opening frame and banged out a 25-19 win in the second set and closed out the match with a 25-13 win in the final set.

Junior Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y.) racked up 14 kills and junior Asia Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) followed with 12 kills for Manhattanville. Senior Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii) had a match-high 34 assists, while a trio of Valiants had two aces each. Senior Sam Miano (Bronx, N.Y.) led with a team-high 14 digs. Reid and Mackey also led the defense with two blocks each. 

Sophomore Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) led the Amcats with 12 kills while freshman Tierney Clancy (Meriden, Conn.) had 20 assists and sophomore Caroline Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) had 13 digs. A trio of Amcats had an ace apiece and freshman Ashley Blair (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had two blocks.
