BOSTON, Mass. - Two goals from senior Olivia Kerester (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and a goal from sophomore Emma Dineen (Hinsdale, Ill.) helped Babson snap the Emerson women's soccer team's winning streak at four as the Lions suffered a 3-1 loss at Rotch Field on Tuesday night in NEWMAC action.
Babson improves to 8-5-2 overall and 5-3 in NEWMAC play, while the loss for Emerson dropped them to 9-7 overall and 4-3 against NEWMAC teams.
Senior keeper Melanie Escobar (Torrington, Conn.) was tagged with the loss for Emerson and made one save through 90 minutes, while Babson sophomore goalie Maddie Gierschick (Hopkinton, Mass.) stopped nine shots. Freshman Veronica Alberts (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) paced the Lions with four shots, while Kerester tallied two goals and three shots for the Beavers.
Emerson nor Babson were able to find the back of the net through the first 45 minutes of play, but it was the Lions who outshot the Beavers, 7-1.
After 58 minutes of scoreless play between Emerson and Babson, the Lions gave up its first regulation goal in its last threes games. After sophomore Jessica Fernandes (Pawtucket, R.I.) collided with Escobar in the crease, the ball came loose and found the foot of Kerester. Kerester made her way around Escobar and guided the ball into an empty net to give Babson the 1-0 lead.
Emerson answered with a goal of their own in the 72nd minute to square the game at 1-all with nearly 19 minutes remaining in the second half. From outside the left side of the box, Alberts sent her first collegiate goal over the head of Gierschick. After Emerson evened the game at 1-1, Babson put two more goals on the board and upped their lead to 3-1.
Two minutes after Emerson evened the score, Kerester broke the 1-1 tie and put her second of the game into the lower righthand corner to up the score to 2-1 in the 74th minute. 10 minutes later, Dineen notched the game-winner at the 84th minute after she crossed the ball past Escobar from inside the left side of the box.
Emerson and Babson both return to the field on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The Lions head down to Coast Guard, while the Beavers return to Babson Park to host MIT.
