CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sophomore Paige Haley's (San Diego, Calif.) fifth goal of the season was the difference in the Emerson women's soccer 1-0 non-conference triumph over Lesley in the 5th Annual Charles River Cup at Edwards Field on Tuesday night.
With the win, Emerson improves to 3-4, while Lesley falls to 4-2-2.
The first half saw neither team take many shot attempts for Lesley outshot Emerson 4-3. Sophomore Jess Frost (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) rocketed the game's first shot towards Lesley goalie Lilly Donovan 10 minutes into the game that was quickly scooped up. Jordan Mitchell nearly put Lesley on the board at the 17:24 mark, but the ball bounced off the post to keep the score at 0-0. A minute after the Lynx put up another failed shot attempt, Haley made her shot count.
Off a crossed pass from freshman Veronica Alberts (Half Moon Bay, Calif.), Haley deposited her fifth goal of the season (21:48) past Donovan to give the Lions the 1-0 lead with nearly 22 minutes left in the first.
Only three total shot attempts came within the second half, all three from Lesley, but none of those shots found their way past Emerson senior goalie Melanie Escobar (Torrington, Conn.) as Haley's lone first half goal was all the Lions needed to grab the 1-0 victory in the Charles River Cup.
Lesley edged Emerson in both shots (7-3) and corner kicks (4-2).
Emerson returns to the field on Thursday in a road tilt against Trinity (Conn.) at 4:00 p.m., while Lesley heads to Elms on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
