Softball Earns Saturday Sweep Over Wentworth

The Lead:  The Emerson Lions Softball Team swept the Wentworth Leopards in a doubleheader on Saturday, winning both games by eight runs.

Game 1:

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Neely Eddletson (West Wareham, Mass.) earned the victory, pitching six innings, allowing four hits, two runs, and striking out two batters.
  • Lexi Semanchik (Flemington, N.J.) and Micaela Dix (White House Station, N.J.) each stole on base for the Lions.  
  • Kallista Leonardos (El Granada, Calif.), Alena Jones (Woodinville, Wash.), and Morgan Mitchell (Riverton, Utah) each had two RBIs for Emerson.
  • Katie Verreault and Ceilidh Higgins each had one RBI for Wentworth.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Emerson opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, putting four runs on the board.   Emerson scored first with a single by Calli Pratt (Dighton, Mass.) bringing home Lexi Semanchik.
  • Pratt was followed by Alena Jones who singled to center field, bringing home two more runs in Lindsey Lowe (Porter Ranch, Calif.) and Kallista Leonardos.
  • Pratt came home on a wild pitch to wrap up the scoring in the first for the Lions.
  • The Lions added on in the fourth inning, starting with a Semanchik double which brought home Micaela Dix.
  • Leonardos drove home Marisa DeFranco (Falls Church, Va.) on a groundout before Lowe doubled home Semanchik, giving the Lions a 7-0 lead after four innings.
  • Wentworth grabbed two runs back in the top of the fifth inning through  a Katie Verrault single that brought home Biana Beverly. The Leopards grabbed a second run on a Ceilidh Higgins groundout to third that brought home Rylee Rehders, cutting the score to 7-2.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, The Lions tacked on three runs to incite the eight run rule.  A Leonardos single brought home DeFranco.
  • Morgan Mitchell stepped to the plate with two outs, singles to center field and bringing home Lowe and Pratt to give Emerson the 10-2 lead and the victory.

Game 2: 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Karagan Knowles (Tucson, Ariz.) pitched a one hit shut out for the Lions, striking out four Leopards.
  • Lindsey Lowe led the Lions at the plate with three RBIs while Leonardos had two.
  • Katie Verreault got the lone hit fo the Leopards.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Emerson struck first in the bottom of the second inning, when Leonardos singled to deep left field, driving in Mary Kuczkowski and Karagan Knowles
  • Lowe followed Leonardos with a double, bringing home DeFranco and extending the Lions' lead to 3-0.
  • Leonardos scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 4-0 after two innings.
  • Emerson tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, before Lowe drove in the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving Emerson the 8-0 victory.
