Women's Cross Country Places 11th in NEWMAC Championship

BOSTON – The MIT women's cross country team made it 11 straight conference championships, claiming the NEWMAC Women's Cross Country team title on Sunday afternoon's 5k at Franklin Park in the NEWMAC Championships.

Seven of the top nine finishers were members of MIT, who totaled 20 points on the afternoon to claim the title. WPI finished in second place with 62 points while Coast Guard's 110 points were good for third. In fourth place was Wellesley with 118 points. Smith College (145 points) and Wheaton (160 points) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Springfield came in seventh with 165 points. Babson (208 points), Clark (224 points), Mount Holyoke (243 points), and Emerson (345 points), rounded out the 11-team field.

Despite having seven of the top nine finishers, it was Coast Guard's freshman Kaitlyn Mooney who won the meet with a time of 17:52. MIT's Mary Eccles (18:09) and Katie Collins (18:11), finished second and third, respectively.

 

Mooney's winning time resulted in her being named NEWMAC Runner of the Year and NEWMAC Rookie of the Year.
