Week 3 Preview: Women's Volleyball Starts NEWMAC Season Tuesday

BOSTON, Mass. - Coming off a week where the Emerson women's volleyball team finished 2-1, the Lions get its first taste of NEWMAC competition this upcoming week. Emerson continues its home schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 12 for its first NEWMAC match against Wellesley at 7:00 p.m. Then on Saturday, Sept. 16, the Lions head down to New London, Conn. to meet Coast Guard for another conference contest at 1:00 p.m.

 

A WEEK IN REVIEW

  • The Lions enter their third week of competition with an overall record of 4-3 through its first seven matches.

  • After Emerson captured a straight set sweep over the University of New England this past Thursday night, the Lions returned to Boston for their home opener to host Amherst and Colby on Saturday afternoon.

  • The Purple & Yellow were bested, 3-1, by Amherst to start off the day before they clawed their way to a 3-2 five-set victory over Colby to close out the weekend.

 

EMERSON STEP INTO CONFERENCE ACTION

  • Continuing their home schedule on Tuesday night, Emerson prepares to kick off their NEWMAC schedule against Wellesley and hit the road on Saturday to face Coast Guard.

  • The Lions finished 2016 with a record of 2-6 against NEWMAC opponents.

 

LIONS WITHIN THE NEWMAC

  • In its third week of competition, Emerson has five players who rank within the top 10 in their respective categories in the NEWMAC.

  • Freshman Grace Tepper (Kensington, Md.) ranks within the top five of two NEWMAC categories, including kills per set (1st - 4.24) and kills (2nd - 106) through seven matches.

  • In the digs category, Junior Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.) comes in with 88 digs to rank her 10th.

  • Junior Kelley Guerra (Randolph, N.J.) ranks third with a .435 hit percentage through 127 total attacks, while classmate Moira Brennan (Glensview, Ill.) has racked up 9.32 helpers per set and ranks third.

  • On the defensive side, sophomore Kayleen Bertrand (New Boston, N.H.) has served up .60 aces per set, which puts her tied for eighth.

 

SCOUTING THE BLUE

  • Wellesley enters Tuesday's match with an overall record of 3-3 coming off their trip to the MIT Invitational, where they finished 2-1 with wins over Geneso and Endicott and a loss to Roger Williams.

  • In last season's meeting between Emerson and Wellesley at Brown & Plofker Gym on September 13, 2016, the Blue topped the Lions, 3-1.

 

SCOUTING THE BEARS

  • Through eight matches, Coast Guard holds an overall record of 6-2 and have gone 4-0 in its last four non-conference contests.

  • Coast Guard is coming off a weekend sweep over Nichols, Western Conn. State and Worcester State at the CGA/Conn. College Tournament.

  • Before the Bears meet the Lions on Saturday, Sept. 16, the Bears open up NEWMAC play against Clark on Tuesday night.

  • Emerson and Coast Guard last met back on September 18, 2016 in Boston where the Bears came out with 3-1 win over the Lions.
