BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - With the match tied at 4-4, the Bears Alison Scagnelli provided the match-clinching point defeating Lions sophomore Alex Weingarten (San Diego, Calif.) 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 5-1, handing the Bears a 5-4 victory over the Lions on Friday afternoon at Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.
The match appeared to be decided early as the Bears won four of the first five points, needing just one more to clinch the match.
In fifth singles, Lions Jolin Cheng defeated the Bears Angelique Gray, 6-1, 6-4, to pull the match within two at 4-2.
Moments later, in first singles, Lions sophomore Sabrina Jacobs (Demarest, N.J) posted a come from behind victory over Alisha Silva, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, to pull the Lions within one point.
Then, in fourth singles, freshman Meredith Stisser (Manchester, N.H.) tied the match at 4-4 following a 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 victory over Amanda Strickland.
It's the second straight, one-point, loss for the Lions who sit at 0-2 in the early going. The Bears improved to 8-4 with the victory.
The women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday with a road match at Salem State University starting at 3:30 p.m.
