NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Gabrielle Auzenbergs scored 50 seconds into the first overtime as Coast Guard came from behind twice to top Emerson 3-2 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
With the win, the Bears improve to 8-7-0 on the season and 4-3 in conference play while the Lions fall to 3-8-2 overall and 3-4 in the NEWMAC.
The eighth win of the year also ties the program record for most wins in a season with the 2002 and 2014 season.
Auzenbergs game-winner was her second goal of the season. Sophomore Claire Hurley scored for the fourth game in a row and added an assist. Freshman Felicia Lombardi notched her second goal of the season and third assist.
The Lions got on the board first in the 13th minute as Frost sent a cross in from the right side. Junior goalkeeper Rachel Boohar punched the ball away but the clearance fell to Alberts. She took a touch and fired a shot on goal for her second goal of the season.
In the 43rd minute, Hurley tied the game for the Bears on a free kick. Hurley hit a quick shot before the Emerson defense was set and put it in the upper left-hand corner for her sixth goal of the season.
The Lions took the lead back in the 50th minute as Alberts dribbled down the left side into the Coast Guard penalty box. Alberts held off her defender and slid across to the center of the box. Frost flicked it to the back post for her third goal of the season and the 2-1 lead.
The Bears tied it up shortly after in the 54th minute as Hurley hit a corner kick to the near post. Lombardi rose up over her defender and headed the ball home for her second goal of the season.
Coast Guard wasted little time in overtime locking up their eighth win of the season as freshman Kylee Ballard attempted to hit a shot on goal in the 91st minute. Ballard's shot was blocked but Lombardi ran down the rebound. With freshman goalkeeper Mary Elizabeth Allen (Miami Shores, Fla.) charging out on her, Lombardi sent a cross past her to the front of the goal. Auzenbergs met the cross and one-timed it into the back of the net for the game-winner.
Boohar (8-7) made one save on three shots on goal. She is now tied for first for wins by a goalie in a single season and is second in program history with 20 career wins.
Allen (1-1) made four saves on seven shots on goal allowing the three tallies.
The Lions continue their NEWMAC schedule with their final road regular season match on Saturday as they travel to Wheaton for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff. Coast Guard is back in action on Friday when they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts for a NEWMAC game against the Clark Cougars. Opening kickoff is 7:00.
