BOSTON - The Emerson women's soccer team had a quiet this past week to close out its September schedule and open up October looking to remain perfect within the NEWMAC with back-to-back conference contests. On Tuesday, Emerson will host Smith at 6:00 p.m. before the Lions head off to Worcester on Saturday to meet WPI.

 

EMERSON KEEPS THE CUP

  • Emerson's lone game this past week was the sixth playing of the Charles River Cup against Lesley, where the Lions and Lynx drew a 1-1 two-overtime tie last Tuesday night.

  • With the tie against the Lynx, the Lions moved their overall record of 2-4-2 through eight contests.

  • Sophomore Veronica Alberts (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) produced Emerson's lone goal within the 54th minute of the second frame before Lesley's Samantha Bessey tallied the equalizer at the 78th minute mark.

 

LIONS IN THE NEWMAC

  • Emerson currently sits fourth in the NEWMAC with a perfect record of 2-0 as No. 16 MIT holds the top spot, followed by Springfield in second, Wellesley in third and both Clark and Wheaton rounding out the top five.

 

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS

  • Smith rolls into Tuesday's matchup holding an overall record of 5-4 and are 1-2 against NEWMAC opponents.

  • The Pioneers are coming off a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the visiting WPI Engineers this past Saturday afternoon.

  • Emerson came out victorious over Smith in the teams' last meeting back on October 8, 2016, as junior Jess Frost (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) sent in the 1-0 overtime game-winner in the 99th minute.

  • Kenza Mdarhi-Alaoui paces the Smith offense with four goals for eight points, while Jordan Isaacs leads the team with two assists.

  • Starting in between the pipes all nine games for the Pioneers is Shelby Hall, who holds a record of 5-4 with nine goals allowed for a goals-against average of 1.09 to match an .883 save percentage with 68 saves within 794+ minutes.

 

SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS

  • Through 11 games, WPI has registered a 7-4 overall record to match a 1-2 record within NEWMAC play, coming off a 2-1 win over Smith last Saturday, its first conference win of 2017.

  • Before facing Emerson on Saturday, the Engineers will host Babson on Tuesday night.

  • With seven goals and four assists for 18 points, Kristen McCrea powers the WPI offense and ranks second within the NEWMAC in goals, tied for second in assists, second in shots (46) and co-leads in points.

  • Gabriela Hoops, the starting WPI keeper in six games, has registered a goals against average of 0.62, having allowed four goals and has turned away 28 shots for a .875 save percentage.
