BOSTON, Mass. – Alyssa Giannone made the difference Saturday afternoon as her header for a goal in the 9th minute of the game led the Emerson Women's Soccer Team to their first NEWMAC win as they beat Mount Holyoke 1-0 Saturday afternoon. With the win the Lions improve to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC while MHC now holds at 4-4 and 1-2 in conference play.
The first half saw Melanie Escobar take to the field for her first collegiate start where she put up three saves in a shutout on the day. The half proved fairly even until a foul lined up Riana Odin about 10 yards to the right outside of the box that saw her place a perfect ball in the air that Alyssa Giannone went up to put a head on and net into the top right corner in the ninth minute of action. The goal was all the major action that was seen in the half as the teams headed into the break with EC up 1-0.
Emerson came out swinging in the second half though, looking to protect their lead as they outshot the Lyons 7-to-3. Zoe Marshall did work for the Lyons between the posts though as she put up three saves in the half to keep MHC in it. While the Lyons stepped up their physical game with five fouls in the half, EC worked the small ball as they were able to drown the clock en route to the 1-0 final.
The Lions return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Gordon for a 3:30 p.m. game in Wenham, Mass while the Lyons host MCLA Tuesday at 6 p.m. in South Hadley, Mass.
