BOSTON, Mass. – Janissa Delzo and Kelsey Johnson combined for 27 points and 15 rebounds on the day as the Emerson Women's Basketball Team topped Elmira for the Emerson Tip-Off Tournament crown, 58-53. With the win the Lions are now 2-0 on the year while Elmira drops to 1-1.
The first half saw the Soaring Eagles jump ahead of the Lions with Alex Balara and Liz Forrest both putting up seven points each to lead the way for Elmira. The Lions struggled with turnovers in the half as they gave up six points off of them. Sienna O'Han helped keep Emerson in the game though as she put up seven points of her own as they went into the half only down 27-23.
The second half saw the Lions flip the script to ground the Soaring Eagles as they doused 20 points in the paint on Elmira with Kelsey Johnson leading the way with 13 of her own. Tournament MVP Janissa Delzo was also on fire with eight points in the half as well as two assists and four rebounds for Emerson.
The Lion offense as a whole calmed down as well, putting up 54% as a team in field goals as the bench lifted Emerson to snake the lead from Elmira with 22 points in the half after only four in the first half. In the end the Lion defense flustered the Soaring Eagles as EC edged away with a 58-53 win.
In addition to Janissa Delzo taking home MVP hardware, Kelsey Johnson and Kristin Brice were also named to the Emerson Tip-Off Tournament All-Tournament Team.
The Lions return to the home hardwood this Wednesday as they set to host MIT to open NEWMAC action at 7:30 p.m. in Boston at Emerson's Brown-Plofker Gym.
