BOSTON, Mass. – A huge game from Kristin Brice for 20 points and 15 rebounds led the way Saturday afternoon as the Emerson Women's Basketball Team topped the Simmons Sharks 62-57 in overtime. With the win the Lions improve to 5-9 on the year and 1-2 in conference play as the Sharks fall to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in the GNAC.
The first half saw the Sharks come out hot as they took off with an early lead, shooting 34% from the floor with Olivia LaCroix powering in eight points in the half.
The Lions surged back after the early run by Simmons with Kristin Brice putting in eight of her own with Shannon Norton coming off the bench to drop seven on the Sharks and make a game of it. Emerson's rebounding kept them in the hunt as well, pulling down 21 boards to Simmons' 15 with nine points coming off second chances with the Sharks taking only a 24-23 lead into the break.
The second half saw the Lions take the reigns from the Sharks, shooting 38% from the floor as Kristin Brice and Elissa Chojnicki put up eight points each to lead the Lions. Liz O'Connor of the Sharks kept Simmons alive though with her 11 as the Sharks outrebounded Emerson 20-to-15 with seven offensive boards alone.
While the lead ping-ponged back and forth in the half, Emerson's 12 turnovers cost them again with Simmons putting up nine points off of them. The Sharks also scrapped 10 point in the paint as well with a last second lay-up by Olivia LaCroix knotting the game at 50 and sending it to OT.
In overtime it was all Emerson though as the Lions took immediate control of the scoreboard and never looked back, capitalizing on the Simmons foul trouble, with the Lions going 8-for-12 to edge away with the 62-57 final.
The Lions will return to action this week as they set to host Norwich Tuesday night as GNAC action rolls on. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Boston at Emerson's Brown-Plofker Gym.
