BOSTON, Mass - In their second meeting with Newbury this season, Men's Volleyball brought their A game as they swept the visiting Nighthawks, 3-0. The sets ended 25-17, 25-19, and 25-20. With the win the Lions rise to 4-6 overall, while staying 0-2 in the GNAC. The Nighthawks fall to 2-9 overall and remain 0-2 in conference play.
The first set opened with the Lions jumping out to small lead off kills back to back kills from Stig Regan, followed by a block, 8-3. But the Nighthawks responded as Joshua Thorne and Wade Robidoux both got kills to close the gap. The Lions maintained a strong lead late into the first set as a kill by Mark Piorkowski closed it out, 25-17.
The second set opened with Emerson winning the first 3 points off Newbury errors. Again the Nighthawks kept it competitive, but couldn't make up for the early Lions lead. Another two errors by Newbury closed out the set for the Lions, 25-19.
The third set was the closest by far, with Newbury and Emerson trading the lead multiple times. Late in the set, Jacob DiTore had some rally saving digs to help keep the Lions ahead. With the score at 22-21, again Newbury made some critical errors, opening it up for Kittivatcharapon to close out the set and match with a monster kill, 25-20.
Stat leaders for Newbury include Robidoux with 10 kills and 5 digs. Right behind him was Xavier Brown-Rose with 7 kills and 2 block assists. Leading in digs was Zach Kaufman with 7. Luis Aranda lead the team in assists with 26.
Leading for the Lions was Wiley with 9 kills and a block assist. Nick Rusk and Piorkowski both had 7 kills. Rusk also had 7 digs, while Piorkowski had a block assist. Jared Gross lead in digs with 9, while Brendan McGonigle had 27 assists, 4 digs, and a block assist. Rounding out the offense was Kittivatcharapong with 6 kills, a solo block and 1 block assist. Followed by Stig Regan with 5 kills, a solo block, and 2 block assists.
Newbury looks forward to hosting a tri match this saturday including Daniel Webster and Wentworth. The Lions return to action on Saturday as well when they travel to Johnson & Wales for a tri match against JWU and Emmanuel.
