BOSTON, Mass. – A 17 kill night from Alex Frapech combined with a career-high 36 assists for Brendan McGonigle led the way Thursday as the Emerson Men's Volleyball Team swept the Daniel Webster Eagles 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21. With the win the Lions improve to 7-9 on the year while DWC drops to 8-6.
Set one saw Alex Frapech step up for EC, flooring seven kills in the set for a .417 average. Brendan McGonigle was nasty as well, posting 12 dimes for a .414 assist percentage in the set. The Eagles battled back with Joel Hendrix putting up seven while nipping on Emerson's heels the entire way, but the Lions closed out the set 25-22.
Set two was a bit more dramatic as the fans got a show with 14 tie scores and five lead changes in a set that came down to the wire. This time Frapech and DWC's Hendrix tied for the floor lead with five kills apiece, but EC's setter again proved the difference with 13 assists for McGonigle. The Lions had to shake off four Eagle blocks with two of their own and two service aces to finally pull away with the 25-23 lead.
The fifth sweep of the season was in store for the Lions as they kicked it up a notch on defense with four blocks in the set, three solo from Nadav Swarttz alone, including the closing point. Frapech dropped another five in the set while McGonigle dropped two kills and 11 assists to finish it out 25-21.
The Lions will set to host GNAC action this Saturday as the Albertus Magnus Falcons roll into town for a 1 p.m. match in Boston at Emerson's Brown-Plofker Gym.
