BEVERLY, Mass. – Another dominant showcase on the courts awaited the Emerson Men's Tennis Team Tuesday as they put up a 9-0 sweep of the Norwich Cadets to open GNAC Tournament play. With the win the Lions are now 10-1 on the year while Norwich finishes at 6-6.
In the two spot, while the Lions won 8-4, the Cadets were scrappy in the match as Joe Dvorak and Patrick Ogden pushed the match to 5-4 before Mitchell Lance and Man of the Match, Niklas Rhodes stepped on the gas to finish the doubles sweep.
In singles play the Lions came out strong again as Niklas Rhodes in the six spot blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 to make it 4-0 for EC right before Vincent Castellini clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the four spot.
Steve Frend rolled in next with a quick 6-0, 6-1 win while Kevin Blisniuk took spot one 6-1, 6-1 over Christian Hoskey. Zach Connolly kept his flawless season going as well in the five spot as her win 6-2, 6-4 to move to 6-0 on the year.
Last on the day was Mitchell Lance in the number two spot where Ryan Grindle pushed him to a down-to-the-wire battle with the first set alone going to a tiebreaker before Lance dug in for the second set to finally finish the sweep with a 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 win.
Next up the Lions will face the winner of the JWU and Suffolk match set to be played to tomorrow in the GNAC Semifinal round. The Lions' match is set to be played Thursday at 3 p.m. in Beverly, Mass. at the Bass River Tennis Club.
