MIT Tops Men's Soccer In NEWMAC Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – A physical match up didn't fall in the Lions favor Saturday afternoon as the Emerson Men's Soccer Team fell 5-1 to MIT in their NEWMAC season opener. With the loss EC is now 3-3 on the year and 0-1 in the NEWMAC as MIT moves to 4-3 and 1-0 in NEWMAC action.

The Engineers wasted no time taking it to the scoreboard as Kareem Itani streaked down the right side of the field to drop a ball in the top left corner unassisted only three minutes into the game. The Lion defense held up for the next 20 minutes until MIT went back-to-back with goals in the 24th and 25th minute to push it to 3-0 headed into the break.

EC was only able to hold MIT for 10 minutes into the second half before Kareem Itani finished off his hat trick on the day with a chip shot over a diving Carter Bowers. Bowers put up five saves in the half, but the Engineers weren't done yet as Sean Bingham one-touched a rebound off an EC save into the net to make it 5-0.

The Lions finally scratched back in the 83rd minute as Jesse Senger put up a sweet cross that Elais Romanos blasted into the left corner of the net to make it 5-1. On the day, MIT outshot EC 30-15 while the teams combined for 20 fouls.

Next up the Lions will host Mount Ida on Wednesday as they set to face the Mustangs at 6 p.m. at Rotch Field in Boston, Mass.
