Men's Soccer Tops UMass Boston In Double Overtime Thriller

BOSTON, Mass. – Wednesday night saw an exciting match and a win well earned by the Emerson Lions Men's Soccer Team who beat UMass Boston 3-2 in a double overtime thriller. Ole Erikson scored the game-winning goal to push the Lions to 7-7 on the year as the Beacons drop to 3-8-2 overall.

For the first half of the match the Lions dominated in ball possession and shots on goal, which paid off in scoring the first two goals of the game. The first goal came from Juan Ossa in the 19th minute. The Lions struck again in the 42nd minute of action with Alex Sypsomos launching a ball from 10 yards outside the box for an untouchable shot into the corner.

After an intense chess match in the midfield UMass Boston struck back to score a single goal before the half as Kelvin Martinez hit Lucas Ordosgoitia with a cross that he pocketed in the top midsection of the goal.

The second half saw the Beacons step up their hustle as they put up eight shots to EC's five.  With both sides pushing aggressively on offense, each team had goals that were recalled due to off-sides to keep the score in Emerson's favor. There were several scoring opportunities for each team that were not capitalized on until UMass finally put away the equalizer with a mere four minutes remaining in the match.

The first period of overtime ended with a heart breaking missed shot from Emerson, but almost immediately in the second period of overtime the Lions rallied and Ole Erikson took the ball up the right side and scored the golden goal to close out the win.

Up next the Lions will return to the home pitch as they set to host GNAC foe Norwich Saturday afternoon. The match is set to start at 3 p.m. after the completion of the Women's 1 p.m. match in Boston at Rotch Field.
