Lowndes Dominant In Close Loss To Occidental
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A double-double from Patrick Lowndes kept the Emerson Men's Basketball Team in the hunt Wednesday afternoon as the Lions dropped a hard-fought 73-63 game to Occidental. With the loss the Lions are now 4-6 on the year as the Tigers move to 5-7 overall.
The first half saw the Lion forwards power the effort as Patrick Lowndes and Brian Hurley both posted eight points each while hauling down a collective six rebounds in the half. EC couldn't seem to shut down Ryan Chong though, who put up 15 points in the first 20 minutes of action to lead the floor.
While EC dominated in the paint, OXY made the most of the 11 turnovers that they forced, with 11 points off of them. EC battled back with six points off of fast breaks but OXY kept the lead with the bench coming in to pour in 10 to lead at the half 42-30.
The Lions tried to chip away at the lead in the second half forcing the Tigers to play physical and send EC to the line 14 times with the Lions downing eight of their free throws. Michael Thorpe stepped up for Emerson in the half as well with 12 points to lead the floor in the half as well with Patrick Lowndes doing work on the boards with 11 rebounds.
In the end, Emerson just couldn't seem to hit their shots, shooting only 29% in field goals while the Tigers shot 42%. OXY also stepped up in the half to drop 14 points off turnovers and 26 in the paint alone as the Tigers edged away with the 73-63 win.
The game closes out Emerson's L.A. trip for the season where they'll return to home to continue GNAC conference action January 8 at Norwich.
